Easy avocado spread

Easy avocado spread

Most people will only know avocados as the “green stuff you use to make guacamole“, which really is such a shame as it can be used in so many other recipes, other than just a dip for chips. You can cut it up and use it in a salad, or turn it into a lovely spread and put it on a sandwich, burger or wraps. Not only does it taste delicious, but it’s also very healthy! If you would like to lose weight, improve your skin and lower your risk of many life-threatening diseases, avocados are the way to go!

According to ‘Medical news today‘, avocados contain more proteins (4g) than most other fruits, consist of monounsaturated fat, which reduces levels of bad cholesterol in your blood and lowers your risk of stroke and heart disease. On top of that, it barely has any sugar (0,2g), which is again less than other fruits. They are also rich in vitamin K, B9, B6, B5 C, E and potassium. Last but not least, one medium avocado contains 11 grams of fiber, close to half the daily recommended minium intake. Apart from being an excellent source of fiber and vitamins, research suggests that there may be a number of other benefits associated with the fruit, including: lowering cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of diabetes, promoting lower body weight, and preventing cancer. AWESOME!

I bet you’re all ready to get started on this avocado recipe now, so here we go! Today’s recipe is one for an easy avocado spread, that you can use for your sandwiches or bread at lunch. But there will be plenty more avocado recipes in the future for burgers, salads and wraps!

Easy avocado spread

Spread Fusion (European - Mexican)
Serves: 2 people
Total Time: Quick

  • 1 ripe avocado (A ripe avocado yields to gentle pressure when held in the palm of the hand and squeezed)
  • 125g low fat yoghurt
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 5 teaspoons of pepper
  • 5 teaspoons of salt
  • 3 teaspoons of lime juice

As the title already suggested, this is one hell of an easy recipe. Really! All you need to do is squeeze out your avocado, and mix it all together with the other ingredients. Doesn't get much easier than that, right?

Now, the easiest way to cut an avocado is to make a deep cut from the top all the way down to the bottom, and back up on the other side.  Put your hands on each side of the avocado and twist. It'll come apart real easy if the avocado is ripe, all that's left then is to simply squeeze and remove the pit. Don't throw it away though! Put the pit in your spread once it's done, it'll help it preserve better.

Mind you, avocados (or spreads) are not meant to be left in the fridge for long, but adding the pit will help prevent it from going brown.

If you have any leftovers, leave the pit in, cover your bowl and put it in the fridge. The lime juice and salt will also help it not go brown, but in the end, you won't be able to keep it for more than one night in the fridge but then again, why would you? It's way too good to leave any leftovers!
