Courgette tots with cheese, chives & red onion

It’s been 2 years since I posted my recipe for tater tots so I decided to create a new recipe based on those delicious potato tots, this time using courgettes! To avoid them being too bland I added some red onion, some dairy free cheese (but you can of course use normal cheese), some chives and pepper. To hold it all together we’re using eggs and breadcrumbs and that’s it in terms of ingredients!

It’s really easy to make this but you do need a good grater, peeler or spiralizer or you won’t be able to get the right consistency. You can use a cheese grater for example and slice the courgette up that way. If you have a peeler you can cut the courgette into ribbons and then cut them up in smaller pieces. If you have a spiralizer it’s more or less the same thing: use it and then chop them up a bit more.

Serves: 4


  • 50g breadcrumbs (or use gluten free rice krispies and blend them to breadcrumbs)
  • 2 large courgettes (preferably organic)
  • 50g grated cheddar cheese (or dairy free cheese)
  • 2 eggs
  • handful of fresh chives
  • 1 small red onion
  • pepper



Preheat the oven to 200°C


Wash the courgettes and grate them using any of the following techniques: cheese grater, vegetable peeler (peel the courgette, then slice up the ribbons), spiralizer (after using it, cut up the courgetti a bit more)


Chop up the chives finely


Chop the onions finely


Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix with a fork, then use a spoon to scoop out a tot, then use your hands to shape them into tots.


Place on a baking sheet and pop in the oven for 20-25 minutes until slightly crunchy on the outside.


Serve with some veggies, fish or meat or have them as a snack with your favourite dip!
